PP and the Parable of The Crumb Gathering

.
Introducing PP and Louey … Two little mice who live in a secret hiding place in
your house.  They are best of friends, and every day they come out of their den and
get into all sorts of adventures together.  This story is called…

The Crumb Gathering

“Wake up, wake up!”  PP the mouse loudly whispered, shaking his friend Louey who was sleeping soundly wrapped tight in a soft kleenex bed.  “The cat is asleep and it’s time for the gathering!”
.
Louey stretched and yawned as big as a little mouse can do.  He wished as usual that he could sleep longer, and told PP so.  But PP reminded him that there was a party in the house the night before, and there was no better time to get crumbs than right now.
.
“If you say so,” Louey slowly whined, dragging himself half-asleep out of bed and grabbing his sack.  He followed behind PP who had already securely attached his gathering bag to his back. Together they crept out of their den into the great room, and then followed close to the walls until they finally came to the kitchen.
.
“Wow!” Louey whispered, his sleepy eyes now wide open.  It was just as PP said.  The owners of the house went to sleep before cleaning the floor, and there was an abundance of crumbs left for them!
.
Quickly and excitedly they scampered about the floor gathering as much as they could.  To their delight there was more than just bread crumbs, but also cake and cookie crumbs; and even better than that, a few mini marshmallows!   As hungry as he was, PP knew that the time to gather was limited.  So he didn’t eat anything but placed every treasure inside his sack.
.
He noticed, however, that Louey wasn’t saving anything, but was running around eating everything.
.
“What are you doing?” PP asked, taking hold of Louey’s arm and stopping him from his eating frenzy.  “You are not putting anything into the bag!  You know how clean this house usually is, and how rarely we get this many crumbs.  We need this food to last us for longer than just today.”
.
“Oh PP, we always seem to have enough food,” Louey replied, “and besides, you know how short and dangerous a mouse life is.  A cat can end it at any time, and I just want to enjoy myself for a change.”  So PP let him go, and Louey continued to run around stuffing food in his mouth.
.
Sooner than expected, both PP and Louey heard an alarm clock and had to stopped abruptly.  The owners of the house were getting up!  Quickly they picked up their bags and put them on their backs, scampering as fast as they could back to their hiding place.  Louey, however, wasn’t running too fast.  He was more like waddling.
.
PP was the first one through the den hole, and soon Louey followed.  But something awful happened.  Louey got stuck!  He cried out, “PP, help me!  I’m stuck in the hole!”
.
PP ran to him and grabbed his hands, pulling and pulling as hard as he could.  “I’m sorry Louey,” he said, “I can’t do it. You are really stuck bad.”
.
“What am I going to do?” Louey cried, “I can’t stay here in this hole forever!”
.
“You won’t be.” PP assured him, “It will just be until you lose a little weight and then you will get unstuck.”
.
“How long will that take?” Louey asked, crying a little tear.
.
“I don’t know for sure,” PP replied, “You ate enough food to last a few days, so I imagine it might take that long.”
.
Louey was very sad, but he had no choice.  He had to just wait it out.  And wait he did.  Hour after hour, and then day after day, Louey stayed firmly stuck in the hole, and each day PP tried to pull him out.  The worst part for Louey, however, was having to watch PP eat three delicious meals every day from the food he had saved in his backpack.
.
“I am so hungry, PP, I wish you would give me a few crumbs!” he pleaded.
.
“I can’t do that”, PP replied, “That would only make you stay stuck in the hole longer.  It’s dangerous to have your butt sticking out on the other side.  Someone might find out our hiding place.  And besides, I’m locked up in this hole because of you.  And now it’s the third day and I’m out of food!”
.
Louey let out a big, sad sigh.  But then, he let out a big loud squeak!
.
PP quickly jumped up from the table, “What’s wrong? Why did you squeak?”
.
Louey cried, “There’s something sniffing my butt!”
.
PP knew that it was probably the cat.  He grabbed Louey’s hands and once again tried to pull him loose.  That’s when a sound was heard, “Phhhhbblltt!”
.
“Louey!” PP asked in horror, “Did you pass gas?”
.
Louey giggled, “Yes, and I think it scared away whatever it was that was sniffing my butt!”
.
PP grabbed his hands again and tried once more.  Suddenly it happened!  Louey popped out of the hole and fell into PP’s arms.  He was unstuck!  Quickly they turned around and slammed the door shut and latched it tight.
.
“Phew!” PP said, “That was one close call!”
.
“It sure was!” Louey said, sitting down and wiping his brow. When he caught his breath he looked up with tearful eyes.

“I’m so sorry, PP.” he said, “I realize now what you were trying to tell me.  I wasted that time gathering for myself, not for us.  Neither was I concerned about the day to come, but only for the day at hand.  I’ve been given mercy, and for that I am very thankful.”
.
“I’m glad”, PP said, giving his friend a forgiving hug.  “Now then, you must be hungry.  I saved something for you.”
.
And with that, PP unwrapped a little bundle hidden in the corner. It was a mini marshmallow!   “I knew you would be hungry when you got unstuck,” he said, “so I saved this for you!”
.
Louey was so touched.  “I don’t know what to say,” he said, “That was very thoughtful of you!  But let’s split it in half.  If I eat the whole marshmallow right now, I might not be able to fit back through the hole again!”
.
And with that they laughed, and sat down at their table to share a meal of love – together.
.
The End
