Last Friday was a weird day. We heard that substantial snowfall (the first of the season), was coming in the evening, but during the day it was a delightful 70 degrees. Wearing shorts and t-shirts, we worked like crazy to get as much done as we could. Around 4pm we could feel the weather suddenly change, and by 6pm it was snowing huge, fluffy flakes!
The next day we woke up to this:
Unfortunately, we weren’t able to totally prepare for this. The next day we woke up to no water. Vinny found a frozen line under our cabin, and thawed and insulated it. Then for some mysterious reason our well pump kept flipping off the breaker. He rigged up something temporary to fix that. Also, we didn’t have time to properly mount the solar panels, so in their current location they are getting covered with ice and snow. As a result of this (and a lack of sun) we are having to run the generator more than we had hoped. And finally we don’t have a snow plow yet. We are hoping the truck will get us up and down this long driveway until we can get one.
A Time for Reflection
Obviously working on projects outside is going to be more difficult, if not limited, now that winter has arrived. The last few days we’ve been taking a break and spending a lot of our time indoors. It’s been nice to catch up with computer work, etc., and also work on making our cabin a cozy home.
Speaking of, this recent storm has made me thankful for a few things! They are small, but they bring happiness into my life.
A Kitchen Table
I don’t know why I didn’t think it was possible to have one in our tiny home, but now that we have one (which I found on Craigslist of course), I don’t know how we got along without it! It’s definitely multi-functional – including for playing our new favorite game, “Ticket to Ride.” :-)
Carpeting
While I was out running errands, Vinny padded and carpeted our whole cabin. What a huge difference this has made on our cold feet!
Candles
Part of conserving electricity has been using candles for spot-lighting. I love the cozy feel they bring to a home. Yes, it’s the small things. (P.S. We are always looking for great sales on candles!).
Coffee, Tea, Wine, & Hot Cocoa
The best 4 food groups. Need I say more? :-)
Communication with Friends & Family
What a blessing to be able to stay connected via the internet and our cell phones. We might just go mad if we weren’t able to do this!
A Cheerful Companion
It’s always helpful, when going through any challenging situations, to have someone in your life who is positive and fun-loving. Vinny is a blessing in this regards. (P.S. Who wants everyone to know he recommended we get a kitchen table over 2 years ago). Lol.
Until next time!
Sounds fun and cozy and hard work and joy and fun!!! Hope and pray you both winter well! Your place looks amazing!!
