Since my last post, weâve been quite busy dealing with âstuffâ that weâve never quite experienced before. In order to get some sympathy, I am going to list some of them. (Just kidding – they arenât nearly as hard as they sound) :-)
âTurn that light off honey!â
We may be âoff-the-grid,â but we arenât âoff-the-rockerâ either. â-) Our expensive solar array so far is strutting its stuff and providing us with electric. But we have to be careful, as some days are cloudy and the battery banks donât fill up as fast. Vinny has become quite the âWat-zi,â reminding me to turn things off when not using them. (Which used to be the other way around, Lol).
Iâll write more details about electric another time. We are still trying to figure it all out, and trying to conserve energy as much as possible. (Even using nightlights and candles at night!)
Does Walmart sell bed caps?
NOW we know why in the Dickenâs books they always wore bed caps to bed! Other than a small propane space heater, we donât have heat yet. So we bundle up a lot! But Saturday the propane man will be coming to set up a tank, and we should be better then. (Weâll be even better after we insulate around our cabin trailer, too).
Limited Wi-Fi
We had to get a dish company out here called âHughes Net,â which is the most common (and usually only) choice for off-the-grid homes. For $43/a month counting taxes, for two years, we have internet ⊠yay! But it has limited data usage, most of which can freely be used between 2am and 8am. I kind of like this âdata cap.â Itâs a way to help regulate my schedule, and prioritize what I do online.
Also, we donât have cable. Instead we are going to get old-fashioned, and free DVDâs from our local library to watch.
What to do with garbage!
We have no garbage or recyclable pick-up here, so that is another issue we have to figure out yet. Hopefully after burning paper, re-using some glass, and composting food scraps, weâll have very little to deal with.
âCan you hear me now?â
It looks like I have to change my cell carrier soon. My phone can give and receive texts fine, but I canât use it for calls. If anyone needs to reach me – text me. I’ll call back as soon as I can.
Messes everywhere
Finally we are just dealing with a lot of project messes here. We had to move fast, and stuff is all over the property. We arenât organized yet, and we are working with limited daylight and warmth to finish preparing our home for winter.
In Summary…
Despite these small challenges, overall, I have no complaints. Â Living like this feels a little adventurous.
So far. :-)
Until next time!
Pam you are your parents daughter so “No hill for a climber” With God all things are possible!
Pam, I love you, you beautiful soul. And I know I will love your husband when I meet him. Gaaa, huge love. All things are possible.
Hey Pam! I’ve taken to wearing night caps; bought 3 from Amazon, in manly colors, of course. I especially appreciate that they keep my ears warm! Sleep much better with them.
Love the term “Wat-zi” ;)
Wow!!! Come visit when I want civilization love you gayle
Funny how that works. I was thinking I had to get ahold of you and see how it’s going. Doesn’t sound awful although maybe a little trying. I’m sure the propane will help tremendously. ( how are you cooking? ). Loving you both for your sense of adventure. Among other things.
Thanks everyone! :-) So Laura, we got from Ron one of those 2 burner propane camping stoves! He had two. :) It’s taking up all our limited counter space, lol, but thankfully doing the trick!
